Well, well, well. Microsoft recently updated their EULA on Windows 10 to include the clause where they can disable any unauthorized software or peripherals on the device that runs their new operating system. Piracy on PC is rampant these days with Ubisoft, the developers of Far Cry 4 and Assassins Creed stating that the piracy rate on PC is over 90%. It’s no secret that consoles are the preferred platform for game developers because piracy is non existent on the Xbox One.
The new clause reads (Section 7b of the Microsoft Services Agreement):
Sometimes you’ll need software updates to keep using the Services. We may automatically check your version of the software and download software updates or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorized hardware peripheral devices.
This is great news for both Microsoft and developers of games and software. Hopefully they can curb the rampant theft of games and software which is distributed via torrent sites. Pirated software is a favorite amongst malware authors, which package these games with viruses and backdoors into your system which steals your personal information.
