Microsoft Movies & TV returns to Movies Anywhere service

Microsoft Movies & TV has rejoined Movies Anywhere as a retailer. This means you can watch some of your purchased digital movies on your Xbox One and Windows 10 devices even if you have purchased those films elsewhere. There is no fee to use Movies Anywhere but you will need to create an account. Once you’ve done that you will need to connect your Movies Anywhere account to your favorite movie retailer services like Vudu, iTunes, Google Play, Prime Video, Fandango Now and of course, Microsoft Movies & TV.

After you have linked your accounts you will find that your purchased movies from participating studios can now be watched on Xbox One, your Windows 10 PC, Surface Pro, your smartphone and even your Kindle Fire.

There is a catch, though. Only movies produced from studios that are currently participating in the Movies Anywhere service will carry over to all of your devices. Those studios are:

  • Disney
  • Sony Pictures Entertainment
  • Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp.
  • Universal
  • Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.
  • That means your digital movies from Paramount, Lionsgate or any other non-participating studio can only be watched on whatever service you used to purchase it.

Still, once you get all of your accounts selected it is very easy to watch your movies, well, anywhere. The films you purchased simply show up in your library for whichever service you are using. Why would you want to do this? For one thing, if a qualifying movie is on sale at Vudu or Google Play, you can buy it there and still watch it on your Xbox One. Another nice feature is if a movie has bonus content on the Microsoft Movies & TV store you will be able to access it even if the movie was bought elsewhere.

Microsoft Movies & TV participated in Movies Anywhere from the beginning but was quietly dropped from the service in late 2017. It is good to see them return to the service and give us another option for watching our movies.
