Pacific Rim 2 Is Unlikely To Happen

It’s bad news today for those that like to see robots fighting dinosaurs. According to a piece from The Hollywood Reporter, a sequel to 2013’s Pacific Rim will not be happening any time soon and it’s unclear as to exactly why. Legendary were certainly interested in producing a sequel and the film did gross a respectable $411 million at the box office. So why is the second film up in the air?

It could well have something to do with the large production budget of the first movie at around $190 million. Legendary Studios currently have a deal to co-finance/ co-produce films with Warner Bros. and so any venture involving Pacific Rim 2 could be bankrolled by both jointly. Legendary were involved with the production of the first film.

“for now the project … has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all).”

So for now, a sequel is looking unlikely. The first film was set in the 2020s, in a universe where massive creatures called Kaiju had emerged from another dimension to destroy the earth. In response to this, huge robots (called Jaegers) were built to do battle with the Kaiju. The pilots were able to control the robots by linking through a neural bridge. As the threat from the Kaiju increased, the last of the Jaegers were deployed to push back the alien invaders once and for all.
